Following on from the success of the Ncera Macadamia Farming project, Indwe Environmental Consulting was appointed to oversee the planning phase of the Amajingqi Macadamia Farming project.
Located along the banks of the Shixini River near Willowvale in the Mbhashe Local Municipality, the Amajingqi Macadamia Farming project was initiated by East Cape Macadamia (Pty) Ltd.
The project involved the establishment of approximately 300ha of macadamia orchards on old cultivated lands. Indwe was appointed as independent environmental assessment practitioners to coordinate and deliver on the statutory approval processes. This involved obtaining the required environmental approvals, securing the land development rights, cultivation and irrigation water rights.
Under a mandate to develop a sustainable farming practice, Indwe together with a team of specialist scientists, regional planners and engineers developed a farm plan and undertook a full scoping and environmental impact assessment and associated water use licence application process. Specialist studies included botanical and fauna surveys, soil surveys, hydrological, aquatic and wetland studies.
Central to the success of the project, was a comprehensive public participation process, extensive stakeholder consultation and community negotiation. Once all the requisite approvals were obtained, the project went into its implementation phase with the development and planting of orchards, construction of roads, dams and irrigation infrastructure.
Indwe was further appointed for the environmental control officer services in order to ensure that the project was implemented in accordance with the procedures outlined in the environmental management plan and in compliance to the conditions of approval.
